Fishing on the Lleyn

Fishing on the Lleyn Peninsula, whether shore or boat fishing provides a great oppurtunity to catch a diversity of fish species on your self catering holiday here at Cae Garw. Whether a complete novice or an experienced angler, the Lleyn has a superb coastline, including over 20 local beaches and rivers.

There are miles of beaches and rocky headlands from which to cast, naming just a few places below.

Pwllheli's two long sandy beaches - Gimlet Rock and South beach - together with the harbour channel offers an excellent angling ground for Bass, Flounder, Dogfish, Gurnard, Monkfish, Wrasse and Black Bream. In summer, shoals of Mackerel swim close enough to be caught from the shore. Tope, stingrays and bull huss can be plentiful further out to sea. Porbeagle sharks access the waters during warmer summers, and herrings can be plentiful later in the year. Baits and fishing permits can be found at the fishing tackle shop - D & E Hughes, Pwllheli

Llanbedrog is a popular small sandy beach with a rocky headland. During the summer, species such as bass, bream, dogfish and flounder can be found. Winter fishing will entail whiting, dogfish and dabs. Over the headland towards Abersoch, sole and turbot are plentiful at the Warren beach.

Abersoch beach is one the most popular beaches of the Llyn Peninsula, high spring tides and autumn storms will produce great catches of bass and flounder, even rays. Mullet can be found around the mouth of the harbour, and mackerel are plentiful in summer. Baits here include razor fish and lugs. A variety of angling shops at Abersoch sell a variety of tackle and frozen or preserved baits and lures. They also offer boat trips to the local islands of St Tudwal's and Bardsey Holy Island. http://www.abersochangling.co.uk/

Uwchmynydd , near Aberdaron offers excellent rock fishing – but the terrain is steep, so it is only for the sure-footed angler, although the views towards Bardsey are stunning.

Hells Mouth (Porth Neigwl) provides great fishing for bass, flatfish, rays, dogfish, whiting ,dabs and coalfish . A hugely popular beach for surfing .

Whistling Sands- During the summer most of the usual species can be found here , as well as the occasional whiting, codling and smoothhound and conger eel.

Porth Iago is one of the best rock marks on the Lleyn- day fishing only. The beach is accessed through a private track at Ty Mawr farm. All usual species here – with sand eels, huss, and even squid. Great for big wrasse and Pollack.

The coastal waters around the Lleyn also produce high quality crab and lobsters, and as a result of an Euopean Grant, new storage facilities at a local National Trust farm near Porth Meudwy, Aberdaron have ensured that the fishermen's catch can be maximised for transporting to a wider market in Wales .

Sample the best local fish produce by visiting the fishmongers at Pwllheli, or dining at Twnti Seafood Restaurant or Plas Bodegroes. During early summer the Llyn Seafood Festival is held at Pwllheli Marina with an array of loacl seafood available

Boats trips are available from Pwllheli and Abersoch to suit your angling ability, either for fishing inshore,or trips that venture further offshore among the local wrecks for pollack, cod, coalfish, ling and conger.

Bardsey Boat Trips will also offer trips around the St Tudwal's, Gwylan and Bardsey island to visit off-shore seal and seabird colonies often with dolphin sightings.
